He is survived by : his children, Kelly Ellerbrock (Ted) of Glandorf, Eric Schmenk (Barb) of Plain City and Kristen Kreienkamp (Dave) of Wayne; his grandson Drew Ellerbrock (Jessica) of Columbus; his stepchildren, Christine Carruthers (Charlie) of Findlay, Scott Wanamaker of Findlay, Lynn Karhoff (John) of St. Louis, MO and Ann Buescher (John) of Ottawa; his stepgrandchildren, Cassie Suever, Lauren Kuhlman of Jeremy Conn, Justin Conn of Jordon Conn, Jackie Castiglioni and Taylor Meyer; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Oliver, Gavin Suever and Evie Castiglioni; and his siblings, Judith McCurdy and Tom Schmenk (Linda).

“My heart broke when I read about the passing of your father and of your grandpa. Don left a positive impression with everyone he ever met. I first met him in 1960 when I was 13 years old and he was a striking 1st. Lt. Air Force Flight Instructor Pilot at Greenville, AFB, Greenville, MS. when he was best man at my cousin's wedding. He was instantly a part of our family and remained so through the past 62 years.. He now has his permanent wings. God speed my dear friend. - Pete Harkness”

“Sincere condolences from The Porterfield family. I flew with Don at Cardinal Health. He was a Patriotic American, and served our Country with honor. My children met Don at the Air Force Museum many years ago and he was a true role model for them. As young adults now they still remember Don and the F-100 whenever we visit!
