He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Cora Belle Hibbard Smith and Herbert Roger Smith of Ashland, KY.; his brother Walter; his mother-in-law Norma Heberle; his wife Christine; his brothers, Fred of Chicago, William (Nancy) of Seattle and Thom (Sally) of Oakland, CA; his siblings-in-law, Marlene Smith of Port Townsend, WA, Karen Pilewski (Jim) of Eastlake, OH, Connie Faulkner (Jack) of Lake City, PA, Mary Szpara of Millcreek, PA, Kenneth Heberle (Brenda) of Botkins, OH, Kevin Heberle (Barbara) of Indian Lands, SC and Craig Heberle (Kim) of Conneaut Lake, PA; his children, Jim Smith (Cathy) of Burlington, NC, Jill Steiner (Justin) of Valparaiso, IN and Andrew Smith of Greensborough, NC; his stepchildren, Brenda Goble (Chad) of Reynoldsburg, Julie Gustafson (David) of Nederland, CO, Daniel McGarvey (Angie) of Richmond, VA and Susan McGarvey of Reynoldsburg; his grandchildren, Paul, Alexander Smith, Grant Steiner, Kellan, Mia Goble, Evelyn, Ruby Gustafson, Norma, Flint McGarvey, Gabriel, Rachel Chrysler and Meredith Zeallear; and his grandfather Jim.

In light of this, and because his grieving family includes other immunocompromised and vulnerable members, the family requires all over age 12 who wish to join them in the services and celebration of Jim's life to be fully vaccinated and asymptomatic, and wear a mask to protect others from asymptomatic spread.
