He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Hughes and John W. Hughes; and his siblings, Earnest, Thomas, Charles, Thelma Jean, Doris and Elsa.

He is survived by: his wife Betty; his children, John Jr. (Dianne), Kathy (Denny), Jeffrey (Kay) and Rodney Sr. (Peggy); his grandchildren, John III, Amber, Lindsay, Kristin, Doug, Shane, Isaac, Theressa, Ashley, Kyla, Jasmine, Jeremiah, Kylee, Tyson, Michael, Macy, Lydia, Allison, Jeffrey, Gwendolyn, Aurora, Collin, Benjamin, Adam, Rodney III and Peyton; and his great great grandchild Adeline.
