He was predeceased by: his parents, Thurl Stephens and Nelly Stephens (Fogle); and his siblings, Charles, Cordelia, Louis, Margaret (Ferguson) and Kathryn Stephens.

He is survived by: his wife Carol (Woolley) of Sidney; his children, Jane Phillips (Brent) of Sidney, Daniel (Beth) of Wapakoneta, David (Angel) of Tipp City and James Stephens (Amy) of New Bremen; his grandchildren, Carolyn Risner (Ted), Jared Phillips (Jessie), Nick Stephens, Holly Beane (John), Jonathan Stephens, Alivia Stephens, Xander Stephens, Piper Stephens and Kamryn Stephens; and his great grandchildren, Landon, Jameson Phillips, Cordelia Risner and Brycen Stephens.
