He was predeceased by: his parents, Virgil R. Gilkey and Beulah Gilkey; his wife Joan Jewell of Perth Amboy; and his siblings, Allen, Richard and Velda.

He is survived by: his children, Cynthia Rich (Randy), Donald Gilkey (Joanie) and Colleen Erwin (Jay); and his grandchildren, Karla Garinger (Rick), Craig Rich (Victoria Gray), Cassandra Gilkey and Maggie Gilkey. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
