He was predeceased by: his parents, John Best and Catherine Best; and his brother Patrick Best (Carla). He is survived by: his wife Charlotte; his daughters, Ellen Mackowiak (Matt) and Claire Edmondson (Lavelle); his grandchildren, Mark, Ben Mackowiak, Lily and Chloe Edmondson; his siblings, Gina Shiffert Tillander (Tom) and Steve Best (Eileen); his sisters-in-law, Barbara Szydlowski and Helen Josefowicz (Matt); his stepmother Millie Best; and his stepbrothers, Jim Hixenbaugh (Ellen) and Bill Hixenbaugh. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in John's name be made to Central Catholic High School or the Historic Church of St. Patrick.
