He was predeceased by: his parents, J. Willet Hays and Frances Schuesselin Hays; and his siblings, Barbara Beard, John and Bill Hays.

He is survived by: his wife Loretta Crider Hays; his daughters, Tammy McGillivary (Marty) and Deborah Hays; his grandchildren, Maria McGillivary, Daniel McGillivary, Joseph McGillivary (Lena), Matthew McGillivary, Timothy Fugate (Sara), Jacob Fugate and Mary Fugate; his great grandchildren, Nolan Fugate and Everett McGillivary; and his sister Shari Everman (Ed). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
