He was predeceased by: his wife Sadie M. Knight; his son-in-law Kenneth Chambers; his siblings, Orren Johnston (Wilma), Cyril "Bud" Johnston, Ewart "Jim" Johnston (Mary E.), Floyd "Joe" Johnston, Aubrey C. "Bob" Johnston and Kathleen E. Moots (Carl); and his siblings-in-law, Robert U. "Bob" Knight (Peg), James L. Knight, Thomas Knight and Betty J. Wegner.

He is survived by: his children, Deborah L. Chambers of Mounds, Randall D. Johnston (Anne) of Wapakoneta and Michael A. Johnston (Nancy) of Omaha Nebraska; his grandchildren, Mandy Menna (Angel), Alec, Samuel and Lillie Johnston; his sister Marie Davis (Ernest); and his sister-in-law Nancy Bickel (Johnston). He is also survived by several step-grandsons; step-great grandsons; nieces; nephews and friends.
