He was predeceased by: his parents, Alois Louis and Ruth Viola Grohl (Bonebrake); and his brothers, Donald and James. He is survived by: his children, Brian Grohl of Los Angeles, California and Sara Grohl (Jason Murtha) of Ellicott City, Maryland; the mother of his children Arlene Pietrouski Grohl of Hudson, Ohio; his niece Lisa Grohl of Los Angeles, California; his nephew David Grohl of Los Angeles, California; and his grandchildren, Bailey, Riley and Delaney.
