He was predeceased by : his wife Bertha; his son-in-law Mike Whipp; his parents, Garrett Rains and Rebecca Rains; and his siblings, Howard, Joe Rains and Myrtle Phillips.

He is survived by : his children, Duwayne Rains (Sharon) and Sherry Whipp; his grandchildren, Lyndsey Hulen (Greg), Andrew Whipp (Jenna), Aaron Whipp (Sarah), Hilary Morgan (Graham), Elijah Rains (Cosette) and Aubrey Rains; his great grandchildren, Colton, Josey, Wyatt, Liam, Payten, Madeline, Kelton, Savanah, Bennett, Camden and Charlie; and his brother James Rains.
