He was predeceased by: his parents, Chester Combs and Bertha Louise Combs (Johnson); his former wife Mary Marie Austin Combs; his wife Carol Ann Rigsby Combs; his son John Daniel "Jay" Combs II; and his siblings, Roy, Eddie, Wesley, Chester, Ronnie, Bob, Kenny, Marylee and Juanita.
He is survived by: his children, Christine Bauer (Brian), Mary Katherine "Sue" Combs (Tony Rose) and Doug Combs (Patty); his grandchildren, K. C. of Aaron, J. C., Rachel, Rickie, Christie, Angel, Brandi, Stephen, Paul and Hammer; and his siblings, Cecil Combs (Bonnie), Donald Combs (Julia), Curt Combs (Shelia), Betty Perkins (Larry), Donna Dicus and Steve Curry. He is also survived by 37 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
His contributions to law enforcement reflect his deep-seated desire to protect and serve others, characteristics that were evident throughout his life.
