He was predeceased by: his parents, Archie Leonard and Mildred Patterson (Tharp); his wife Hazel Annette Patterson; his siblings, Leonard, Ray, Harry Patterson and Anna Mae Sampson; his children, Dorothy "Dodie" Switzer and Leonard "Arch" Patterson; and his granddaughter Brandi Thompson.
He is survived by: his children, Christine Shields (Jeff) of Gloucester, VA, Max Thompson (Julie) of St. Clairsville, OH, Sammie Yamagata (Greg) of Las Vegas, NV and Charity Fato (Bryan) of Wheeling, WV; his sibling's children, Penny Swiger (Tim) of Moundsville, WV and Larry Patterson (Mary) of Bellaire, OH; and his sister Frances Sue Long of Bellaire, OH. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
