He was predeceased by: his parents, Valent Smolko and Anne Baytos Smolko. He is survived by: his wife Nancy Copenhaver Smolko; his children, Suzanne Lockiec (James) of Poland and Andrew Smolko (Ellin); his grandchildren, Nathaniel Grantz, Carson, Abigail, Benjamin, Genevieve, Allison and Luke; and his sister Marie Budinsky (Edward) of Ivins, UT..
