He was predeceased by: his parents, George Friend and Ruth Bryar Friend; and his siblings, Ruth Merifield and George Friend. He is survived by: his son Howard T. (Cathi); his friends, Columbiana and David Scott (Susan); his grandchildren, Alison Thibaut (Drew), Megan Friend, Howard Christopher Friend (Julie), Marc Friend (Meghan), Sarah Friend (Dennis Gilligan), Matt Friend (Brittni), Tim Sheetz (Hollie), Amy Thompson (Greg) and David Friend Sheetz; his great grandchildren, Lucy, Ruthie, Bryar Thibaut, Howard, Mia, Michael Friend, Molly, Ellie Friend, Evelyn, Williams Gilligan, Annie Friend, Zachary, Lucas, Beaux and Blake Thompson; his brother James "Sonny" (Mary); his friends, Boardman, Richard (Nancy) and Columbus; and his brother-in-law Paul Merifield of Los Angeles, CA.. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Due to the current situation with the pandemic, a private graveside service followed by full military honors will be held for immediate family only at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Any memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in Mr. Friend's name to Camp Fitch YMCA, 12600 Abels Rd., New Springfield, PA 16430, which will be used for the maintenance and upkeep of Friend Circle, an amphitheater named in Howdy and Gert's honor, or to the Four Square Foundation, 110 S. Shore Dr., Boardman, OH 44512.
