He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold Bates and Iola Bates; his children, Amber Mervine, Brenda Bates and Bruce Bates; and his siblings, Cathleen McPhetus, Rosalie Berkshire and Jeff Bates.

He is survived by: his close friend Kim Stonerock; his brothers, Bob Bates (Nancy) and John Bates (Mary); and his sister-in-law Ginger Bates. He is also survived by granddaughter and grandson; and many friends.
