James left this world on July 4, 2025 at the age of 85, leaving a void in the lives of so many people. He was predeceased by: his parents, Nora Ola Roberts Wates and Lenars "Peter" Wates; his son Daryl Vaughn Miles Wates; his granddaughter Amaris Barika Brackeen; and his siblings, Luther (L. C.), Claudia Johnson, Olen, Louise Richardson, Odis, Willie, Evelyn Freeman, Freddie Crayton and Shirley Jo Wates.
He is survived by: his son Jerald Allan Wates; his wife Carolyn Miles of Boswell; his daughter Ramona Lachele of Bedford; his brother Lyndal Frank Wates; his grandchildren, Samantha Eddins, Joshua Brackeen, D'Angelo Brackeen, North and Obadiah Brackeen (Genesis); his great grandchildren, Gabrielle, Yasmine, Arden and Amaris Elizabeth; and his siblings-in-law, Dorothy Debose-Boyd, Rev. Cecil Miles (Mattie) and Thurman Miles (Elizabeth).
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 18th 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home (2118 S Commerce St, Ardmore, OK 73401). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 19th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Christ Community Church (1951 Merrick Dr, Ardmore, OK 73401).
