He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Cates and Myrtle Cates (Morelin); his son Earl Cates, Jr.; and his siblings, Glen Cates, Ernie Cates, Melvin Cates, Bud Cates of Carlos, Zora Lamb, Elvie Cates, Azilee Cates, Ada Cates and Opal Cates.

He is survived by: his wife Zadith; his children, Judith Kopetzky of Shelby and Dwane Cates of Pheonix, Arizona; and his sister Rose McKeown of Stillwater. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
