He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, R. J. Bates, Sr. and Myrtle Bates (Hughes); his sons, Thomas E. Bates (Marsha) and Gary W. Bates (Marian); and his grandchildren, Brian Bates (Vickie), Emily Marsh (Hunter), Natalie Rychecky (Thom), Meredith Thornton (Charles) and Brad Bates (Ashley).

A graveside service was held on Monday, June 16th 2025 at 3:00 PM at the Gracelawn Cemetery (1407 North Blvd, Edmond, OK 73003).
