He was predeceased by: his parents, James Oliver Nelson and Mardell Nelson (Hendrix); his former wife Mary Nelson; his wife Barbara Nelson; and his brothers, Lem Nelson, Vernon Nelson Sr., Henry Nelson and Gary Nelson.
He is survived by: his children, J. D. Nelson Jr. (Meredith) of Goldsby, Larry Nelson (Susan) of Northlake, TX, Keith Nelson (Deana) of Norman, Gayla Wills of Moore and Kimberly Phillips of Goldsby; his stepdaughter Sharon Saunders of Goldsby; and his siblings, Bobby Nelson of Purcell and Linda Holsey (Bobby) of Goldsby. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
