He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Lafayette Cates Jr. and Marsha Vale Cates (Smith); and his son Robert Christian Cates. He is survived by: his daughter-in-law Stephanie Cates; and his grandsons, Tyler Cates and Bradley Cates.
