He is survived by: his wife Lenette Bainter Gates; his sons, Aaron Gates of Perry and Nathanael Gates (Ruth) of Georgia; his mother Roberta Gates of Perry; his siblings, Darrell Gates of Perry, David Gates (Barbie) of Perry and Teresa Reeder (Gary) of Perry; his nephew Dakota Reeder; his nieces, Autumn Gates and Anna Gates; and his aunt Brenda Jones of Perry.
