He was predeceased by: his parents, Coke Ruth and Hattie Ruth (Pearson); his son Gary Makerney; his brother Coke Makerney; and his nephews, Carlton and Jason Makerney.

He is survived by: his sons, Jack Makerney, James Makerney, Jerry Makerney, John Makerney, Glen Makerney, Scot Makerney and Shawn Makerney; and his siblings, Patsy Durham, Steve Makerney and Joe Makerney. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
