He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard Gates and Emma Gates (Gleason); and his siblings, Buzz Gates, Barbara Ann Daily, Juanita Kizer, Edith Stokes, Lela Priddy and Carol True.

He is survived by: his wife Paula Gates; his children, Tom Gates (Susan), Todd Gates (Natalie) and Debbi Scott (Charley); his sister Linda Crawford (Richard); and his grandchildren, Thomas Gates, Emily Luevano, Matthew Gates, Emma Mull, Amanda Scott and Hanna Fisher. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.
