He is survived by : his wife Shela Faye Carey; his children, Richard "Richy" Lee Carey, Jr. of Shreveport, Louisiana and Catherine "Cathy" Elizabeth Carey Tortolini of Newcastle, Oklahoma; and his grandchildren, Brett Havener of Shreveport, Logan Tortolini of Oklahoma City, Lynlee Tortolini of Newcastle, Oklahoma. and Catelyn Tortolini of Newcastle, Oklahoma..

“In loving memory of Richard Lee Carey Sr., Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. I remember Richard's bands well when he was at Tipton. He always had such innovative shows and large bands. When I met him, he was so helpful to me as a young band director, so polite and always willing to help. A really great guy! I never did find out where he was born or where he even went to college.”
