He was predeceased by: his parents, John D. Nikkel and Stella Howell; and his siblings, Paul Nikkel and Gladys Zulauf. He is survived by: his wife Carole; his son Robert Nikkel; his daughter-in-law Robin; his grandson Matthew Nikkel (Sara); his great grandchildren, Emmett and Dorian; his grandson Bradley (Erin); his great grandchildren, Logan and Lincoln; his granddaughter Rebecca Turney (Stephen); his great grandchildren, Everett and Beau; his son-in-law Lee; his granddaughter Laura Thomas (Jeremy); his great grandchildren, James, Luke and Elizabeth; his grandchildren, John McSparran (Mary) and Kelly Daigle (John); his great grandchildren, Benjamin, Zoe and Lucy; Melody McSparran.
He recognized the community support from his own small town that allowed him to go to college, and thus he founded the Nikkel Family Foundation to help other under-resourced students pursue education by opening doors through financial support.
