He was predeceased by : his parents, Adolph Grothe and Alma Grothe (Peterson); his former life partner Frances Tauer of Badger; his siblings, Walter, Dallas Grothe and Constance Grothe; and his grandson Matthew.

He is survived by : his wife Loretta; his sister Elva Auestad; and his children, Terry (Jeff), James, Susan (Michael), Kathryn (Larry), Kelly (Lois) and Joel. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 2 great -great -grandchildren.
