He was predeceased by : his parents, Thomas Tompkins and Rosemary Tompkins. He is survived by : his husband Peter Rosenblatt; his parents-in-law, Eddie and Bobbie Rosenblatt; and his pet Greta. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law; two nieces; two nephews; two brothers-in-law and their wives; one sister-in-law; four nieces-in-law; two nephews-in-law; numerous cousins.

His family asks that donations be made to the Oregon Humane Society in James' honor.
