He was predeceased by: his parents, Lansing Bates and Pilar Bates; his in-laws, John Ybarzabal and Juanita Hoff; his siblings, Consuelo DeLong (Bates), John (Loretta Grove) and Robert Eaton (Peter Joyce); his son-in-law Jay Pickett; and his nephews, Robert DeLong and David Bates.

He is survived by: his grandchildren, Maegan, Michaela, Tyler Pickett, Jessica Tettelbach, Andrew, John Bates, Gabriella, Miya Bates, Michael and Luke McGrath; his great grandchildren, Walker, James Pickett, Jack, Henry Bates, Georgia, Bowen Bates, Brooks and Quinn Tettelbach; his wife Irene Bates; his children, Elena Pickett (Bates), Geno Bates (Laura), Mike Bates (Tammy), Angela (Bates) and McGrath (Josh); his brothers, Robert Bates (Carolyn) and Steve Bates (Sandy); his siblings-in-law, Juanita Eaton, Kitsie Joyce and Bill DeLong; and his caregiver Shawna Pitman. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
