He was predeceased by: his parents, Vergil Leslie and Irene Backes (McGrath); his sister Christina; and his son Ron Backes. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Smith; and his son Vergil (Darlene). He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 9th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the The Salvation Army Newport Corps (140 NE 4th St, Newport, OR 97365).
