He was predeceased by: his parents, Matthew R. Smith and Evelyn Groogan Smith; and his sisters, Cindy Thompson and Penny Crubaugh. He is survived by: his wife Geraldine Smith (Ferens); his children, Stephen R. Smith Jr. (Ruth Ann), Kellie Friel (Brian), Christopher Smith (Carrie) and Megan Whelan (Brendan); his grandchildren, Mattie Farquharson (Anthony), Molly, Julia (Matt Dawson), Lizzie, Emily, Cydney, Cali, Kyle, Brynn and Ryan; and his great grandchildren, Trey and Myla. He is also survived by his loving nephews, nieces and cousins.
