He was predeceased by: his parents, John Elwood and Mary Klotz Splain; and his sister Marilyn Splain Frey. He is survived by: his wife Charlotte M. Splain; his sons, Stephen Michael (Tracy Price Splain) and John Matthew Splain (Margaret Casey); his grandchildren, Katherine (Cody McConaghy), Shawn Splain, Isaac Mayer-Splain and Ian Mayer-Splain; and his brother Lee Splain. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a large extended family.
