He was predeceased by: his parents, John Thomas and Flora Thomas (Koch). He is survived by: his wife Kathryn D. Thomas (McCarthy); and his children, Judith A. Miller (Terry) of Hellertown, Richard J. Thomas Jr. (Karen) of Center Valley, Marsha A. Herrin (Gregory) and Vicki A. Delmore (Rick) of Hellertown. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Richard's name to The American Lung Association.
