He was predeceased by: his parents, Selden Merrill and Frances Sterling Smith; his wife Carole White Smith; his brother Powell; and his siblings-in-law, Judy Smith and George Thumm.
He is survived by: his children, Robert Smith (Shelly) of North Carolina and Paige Smith of Maryland; his sister Carol Thumm of Cambridge Springs; his grandson Christian Smith; and his sister-in-law Mary Anne Williams. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorials may be made in Merrill's name to the Edinboro Area Historical Society, the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department and Washington Township Parks and Recreation.
