He was predeceased by: his parents, Julius Schmidt and Mary Schmidt (Sivy); his siblings, Julius "James" Schmidt and Catherine "Kitty" Popovich; his brother-in-law Frank Popovich; his stepmother Betty Coldren Schmidt; the mother of his children Patty Grimm (McManus); his in-laws, Tom and Phyllis McManus; his daughters, Tricia Sabatula (Larry) and Trinette Cunningham (Adam); and his grandchildren, Josh Sabatula, Jenna Whyel (Matt), Jillian Sabatula, Jakob Sabatula, Jackson Sabatula and Maggie Rose Cunningham.
He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Schmidt (Rocco); his siblings-in-law, Alice Schmidt and Chuck Rocco (Joanne); his cousin Kenny Kushner (Debbie); his nieces and nephews, Lisa Dixon (Bill), Lora Spear (Billy), Janelle Rocco, Sonya Confone (Tom), Jimmy Schmidt, John Rocco, Ron Rocco (Julie) and Chuck Rocco; and his godsons, Dylan and Jordan.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Fayette Friends of Animals, Keeping the Faith Animal Shelter or the Wounded Warrior Project.
