He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. Ambus H. Hunter and Josephine Hunter (Foster); his daughter Doretha; his sister Dorris Moffett; and his brothers-in-law, Joel Moffett and Eugene Hamilton.

He is survived by: his wife Ruth Landingham; his children, Darrell L. Hunter (Ana), Rev. Duane F. Hunter (Kicole), Dwight D. Hunter (Vickie), Dale L. Hunter and Denise A. Hunter-Riley (Walter); his stepchildren, Annette Sims, Judy Jones (Charles) and Christopher Sims; his siblings, Ambus Hunter III (Philomena), James C. Hunter (Karen), Gerald P. Hunter (Dorothy Ann), Virgia Ann Hamilton, Marcia Hooks and Lavita Williams; and his siblings-in-law, Annie Pigee, Patricia Helm, Mary Simon, Mozella Hunter and John Henderson. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
