He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Lewis Akers and Lucy Akers of Matoaka; his wife Ruth Akers (Taylor); and his daughters, Frances Reed (Thomas), Garnetta Shope (Martin), Christina Bucher, Peggy Hartman and Russell. He was also cherished by eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John Lutheran Church.
