He was predeceased by : his parents, Leif Smestad and Astrid Smestad (Nygaard); his wife Anna Smestad (Thoresen); and his son Erik Smestad. He is survived by : his children, Linda Smestad (Eivind), John Smestad (Kim) of Forks Twp, Judy Smestad-Nunn (Richard) of Brick, NJ, Astri Smestad-Myhre (Sigbjorn) of Cranford, NJ and Kristian Smestad (Jerelyn) of Westerly, RI. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
