He was predeceased by : his wife Julia DeCicco Sands. He is survived by : his close friend Elaine Reitchel; his children, Mark Sands (Nila), Donna Jo Van Tieghem (Richard), Valerie Wrobel (Mark) and Michael Sands; his grandchildren, Julia Flath (Evan), Lisa Foster (Lee), Michelle Van Tieghem (David Fox), Shannon Benedikt (Erik) and Sean Wrobel; and his great grandchildren, Mira Flath, Rowan and Skye Foster.

In lieu of flowers, consider donations to one of his favorite charities, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Covenant House.
