He was predeceased by: his parents, Virgil Nelson and Jean Nelson (Scott); and his sister Cindy Wilson. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Avenali; his sons, Robert Nelson Jr. (Danielle) of Kane and Brandon Nelson of Ludlow; and his grandchildren, Breeze and John Nelson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
