He was predeceased by: his parents, Arnold Thater Kappen and Sylvia Ann Kappen (Marthens); and his sister S. Ann Kappen. He is survived by: his wife Carol Sue Kappen (Canatella); his children, Michael David Kappen, Eloise Elizabeth Kappen, Arnold John Kappen (Karen) and Cassandra Ann Villanueva (Micah); his grandchildren, Arnold P., Timothy J. Kappen and Raphael E. Villanueva; and his sister A. Marie Devlin.
