He was predeceased by: his parents, Tich Thien Thai and Ly Tu Luong. He is survived by: his wife Thuan Thi Thai (Vo); his children, Marie Shirk (James) of Leola and David Thai (Vy) of Leola; and his grandchildren, Ulysses Van Shirk, Mason Thai and Mila Thai.
