He was predeceased by: his parents, John Gruver and Susan Gruver (Bosserman); his grandson Max Gruver; his sister Norma Emma Gruver; and his siblings-in-law, Dr. Martin Luther Fackler, James L. L. Baker and Gloria A. Gruver.
He is survived by: his wife Joanne Kistler-Gruver (Scholl); his children, Jeffrey E. Gruver (Viktoria), Beth Anne Gruver Bailey, Stephen M. Gruver (Rae Ann) and Jeanne Marie Gruver Doll (Brian); his stepchildren, Amy Kistler Gunarich (Andrew), Dr. Meg Kistler Figdore (Christopher) and Dr. Douglas G. Kistler (Melissa); his grandchildren, Daniel, Bryan, David, Katrina, Alex, Lily Kate Gruver, Joshua and BriAnna Doll; his stepgrandchildren, Sarah Harbold, Aaron Gunarich, Matthew Figdore, Katelyn Figdore, Emily Doherty and Morgan Kistler; and his siblings, Betty Alice Baker and Glenn LeRoy Gruver. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.
