He was predeceased by: his parents, Jay Ness and Myrtle Van Ness (Knapp); his siblings, Earl, Bill Van Ness, Lois Long, Norma Schroeder, Ida Johnson, Iva Hoke, Alice Packer and Arlene Webster; and his son Alden Jay Van Ness.
He is survived by: his wife Lynnette Van Ness (Smith); his children, Calvin Van Ness (Shacara Zimmerman) of Pine Grove, PA, Gary Van Ness (Jennifer Rodriguez) of San Antonio, TX, Carla Van Ness of Wellsboro, PA, Diana Van Ness of Sweet Valley, PA, Barbara Richards (Jason) of Wellsboro, PA, Melissa Owlett (Jack) of Middlebury Center, PA, Rebecca Hickernell (David) of Duboistown, PA and Carl Van Ness (Reagan) of Mansfield, PA; and his sister Doris Brewster of Mansfield, PA.. He is also survived by twenty five grandchildren: sixteen great grandchildren.
