He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph C. Cates and Nellie E. Cates (Forsht); and his brother Richard Arthur Cates. He is survived by: his wife Beth A. Whitfield; his daughters, Michelle L. Carr (John) of Chicago, Rebecca S. Van Dyke (Timothy) of Philadelphia, Erica M. Cates (Charles Peterman) of Chicago and Stephanie L. Gonzalez (Joseph) of Virginia Beach; his grandchildren, Katelyn, Laura, Danielle, Christopher Carr, JJ, Tyson Van Dyke, Charlie Jo Cates-Peterman, Nadia Olvitt, Jaidon Mullen, Justyse and Asher Gonzalez; and his sister Pamela Kauffman (Gary) of Altoona.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 2nd 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Mauk & Yates Funeral Home (719 N 4th Ave, Altoona, PA 16601). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2nd 2025 at 12:00 PM at the same location.
