He was predeceased by: his parents, Russel Shaffer and Bessie Shaffer (Snyder); his siblings, Marie Rice and George Shaffer; and his son John R. Shaffer.

He is survived by: his wife Elsie Shaffer (Neitz); and his children, Russell Shaffer (Michelle) of Milroy, Crystal Jost (Frank) of Lewistown and Rosalie Baumgardner (Greg) of Belltown. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
