He was predeceased by: his parents, Benjamin Matthews and Dorothy Matthews (Boone); his siblings, John E. Matthews, Shirley Hoover, Melvin Matthews and Donna Peck; his grandchildren, Dennis Jack Flasher and Tara Beth Matthews; his nephew Kenneth Matthews; his brother-in-law Howard Hoover; and his sons-in-law, Dennis J. Flasher and Dennis Boozel.

He is survived by: his wife Betty G. Matthews (Johnston); his children, Charles A. Matthews of McVeytown, Rocky Matthews (Tamara) of McClure, Sunday Boozel of McVeytown, Peggy Snyder (Robert) of McVeytown, Michael Matthews of McVeytown and Jon Matthews of Idaho; his siblings, Robert Matthews (Pauline) of Palmyra, James Matthews (Dorothy) of Lewistown, Mary Schueck of Lewistown, Connie Matthews of Reedsville, Ronnie Matthews (Cindy) of McVeytown and Kenneth Matthews of McVeytown; and his siblings-in-law, Thelma (Sammy), May and Samuel. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
