He was predeceased by: his parents, George W Shaffer and Sarah L Shaffer; his siblings, Norman, Roy, George, William and Margaret Baumert; and his half-siblings, John, Merle Grim and Sarah Shaffer.

He is survived by: his wife Shirley Shaffer; his children, Scott (Debbie), Todd and Donna Crawford (Michael); his grandchildren, Michelle, Deanna (Andre), Joshua, Jonathan (Macy), Robert (Courtney) and Aaron; and his sister Anna Mae Mentzer.
