He was predeceased by : his parents, George W. Hess and Eva Hall Hess; his stepmother Margaret E. Hess; and his siblings-in-law, Betty Hess and Joe Pacella.

He is survived by : his wife Judith A. Hess (Hazel); his children, Alan J. Hess (Lisa Vacca) and Sherry L. Hess; his grandchildren, Tyler, Lyndsey and Shane Garrett; his siblings, Jack Hess (Judy), Nancy Wensel (Gary) and Linda Pacella; and his sister-in-law Sandra Hazel Thomas (Herb). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for cancer research.
