He was predeceased by: his parents, Dwight Shirer and Gertrude Shirer (Schake); his wife Frances M. Shirer; and his sisters, Eleanor McWilliams and Ruth Popovich.

He is survived by: his daughter Jacqueline Shirer-Hanes (Brian); his grandchildren, Kyle and Erin Hanes; and his brother Paul Shirer (Bonnie). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
