He was predeceased by: his parents, Elsie M. Mertz (Matthews) and Charles D. Mertz; and his siblings, Marie Painter and Harold Mertz. He is survived by: his wife Lucy Mertz (Reinert); and his children, Carol A. (David Eckman) of Pleasanton, CA, Barbara J. Balmer of Elverson, PA, Donald R. Mertz of Elverson, PA and Jane E. (Brian Piersol) of Elverson, PA.. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Monday, September 21st 2026 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Christ Lutheran Church (525 Covered Bridge Rd, Oley, PA 19547). A funeral service was held on Monday, September 21st 2026 at 10:30 AM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Russell's name to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 3401 Civic Center Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19104.
